A group of seven accused members of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
