Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
